The best selection of hosta bulbs to buy online
The queen of shade plants, hostas offer lush foliage with little maintenance required, making them a benevolent ruler of the garden. Sometimes called plantain lilies, if these beauties are properly cared for they can live to be 30 or more years old! Hostas originate from Asia and are a member of the Asparagaceae family. They are said to be a symbol of friendship and devotion. Hostas come in a variety of shapes, colors, textures, and sizes and Eden Brother's offers a variety for even the pickiest of gardeners!
When to plant hosta bulbs
These luscious plants can be started in the spring or fall. Preferring partial to full shade, hostas require protection from the hot, summer sun. They prefer well-draining but moist, compost-rich soil with temperatures between 60 and 75 degrees F. Plant your hostas with the roots pointed downward and the eye just below the soil line. Spacing will vary depending on the variety.
Your guide to caring for hostas
Water hostas weekly and add fertilizer in spring to midsummer until about July to allow the plant to harden for the winter. Add mulch around the plants to help retain moisture. Typically, hostas will bloom mid-summer. When the plant finishes blooming for the season, remove dead stalks. Hostas will reach full size after approximately four to eight years. You can propagate your plants by dividing any crowded clumps in the spring when new shoots appear.
The most popular varieties of hostas include colors of deep green, soft sky blue, and mixed white and green. While some reach a mere six inches tall, others may grow up to four feet tall! For a classic, green and blue-edged leaf look, check out Eden Brothers' Fire & Ice Hosta Roots. Or maybe you prefer something more delicate, like the White Feather Hosta Roots. If you can't decide Eden Brothers also offers bags of Mixed Hosta Roots and Mixed Giant Hosta Roots! The opportunities truly are endless!
Companion plants for hostas
Plant your hostas with companion plants like astilbe, ferns, geraniums, and other shade-friendly plants to create the garden of your dreams!
