The appropriately named Big Daddy Hosta is one of our biggest and toughest varieties. The unassuming bulbs produces a plant that is basically maintenance free and slug resistant! The leaves of the perennial Big Daddy Hosta are icy blue in color and have a cupped shape. They produce pale lavender flowers in July for a special touch. This variety is also suitable for planting in containers or tubs.

We are sorry to hear that your hosta roots never emerged after planting, especially after showing such promising growth in the package! It's not unusual for dormant hosta roots to begin growing while in the package. Once planted, however, they rely on establishing a healthy root system before winter sets in. Early freezes, repeated freeze-thaw cycles, overly wet soils, or poor drainage can all affect establishment and spring emergence. We are happy we were able to connect with you directly and provide a resolution, and we're excited that you'll be giving them another try!     We received 10 roots of Big Daddy in our order. They came fairly late in October, and when we planted, it snowed quite quickly after. I don't know if that's the reason possibly none of these came up (it's possible one or two did, but they are so small and don't look like they're going to make it), but I'm really disappointed in Eden Brothers for not responding to my inquiry about it. I sent it May 26th, and it's June 1st, now. I'm about to do two more reviews of the other two varieties we bought because the same thing happened there, too.

Hostas can sometimes be slow to emerge, particularly after a fall planting followed by an early snowfall. Weather conditions, soil moisture, and root establishment during the winter months can all impact spring growth and vigor. We also apologize for the delay in our response!     I planted these in November 2025 and was looking forward to these coming up in the spring. It is now May 2026 and nothing. Planting bulbs and seeds can be a hit or miss… this was a miss… very disappointed.

    Hosta Roots - Big Daddy

    I’ve been trying to find a hosta that compares to my favorite once I planted years ago at an old house. Received the big daddy roots as a gift from Eden. And they’re so much better. Completely forgot to plant them and put them to the side. When I remembered, they were growing in the bag. They’re already thriving and 6” tall…with absolutely no water…oops! I’ll be buying more when they’re restocked.

    What a disappointment. I planted these last fall and left a name plate for the Hosta Big Daddy. Nothing came up I waited the entire season. Very disappointed. I would not recommend.

    Disappointed - I’m in zone 7 and I ordered and planted 10 of these last fall in my partial shade backyard - it’s now June and I’ve only seen one of them sprout, but not continue growing. And no sign of life from the others at all. I got four out of ten spouts in the Fire and Ice hostas I ordered and planted at the same time, so slightly better but still a let down.
