Planting the moon garden of your dreams
- 24 varieties of suggested moon garden flowers
- Daisies, moonflowers, blue columbines, and more!
- A floral wonderland meant to be enjoyed by the light of the moon
- Moon gardens are made up of white or pale-hued flowers that bloom late in the day
The Top Characteristics of a Moon Garden
Moon gardens are magical spots where one grows flowers and plants that are meant to reflect the moonlight, while still staying visible, beautiful, and fragrant during new or obscured moons. Typically, white flowers would occupy the majority of the garden, coupled with select grey and silver foliage. The bright whites reflect the light of the moon, making the flowers almost glow in under the moonlight. While these gardens are meant to be enjoyed by the light of the moon, they are still wonderfully beautiful during the light of day.
The very first moon garden on record was created in Massachusetts in 1933 by Benjamin Poore. He filled the garden with bundles of white flowers, and believe it or not, he even included some white animals in the garden! While the addition of animals is up to you, we do have some suggestions for flowers.
Great Flowers to Include in your Moon Garden
Some popular choices for moon gardens include sweet alyssum, birds eye, baby's breath, white creeping phlox, moonflower, calla lilies, jasmine, white lupine, white hydrangea, white cosmos, bishop flower, and white bleeding heart. However, almost any white flower will fit right in to a moon garden. Some plants in moon gardens pull double duty by reflecting the moon and emitting a sweet, intoxicating fragrance that beckons nighttime pollinators such as moths and bats. Consider planting a mix or early, mid, and late summer bloomers to ensure your garden has a steady stream of flowers in bloom.
Other features of moon gardens
With moon gardens, there is no need to limit yourself to flowers alone. Trees, shrubs and other elements such as reflective gazing balls, glow in the dark pots, and string lights will all add to the atmosphere of magic. Arranging white rocks along walkways or in bedding will further illuminate your moon garden. Consider adding a water feature, such as a fountain or pond to enhance the tranquility of your garden.
When planning and planting your moon garden, keep in mind that different varieties of plants have different requirements. Remember to group flowers with similar soil, sunlight, and water requirements to ensure proper care and ease of maintenance. Be sure to refer to the individual planting guides for proper instructions.
