Yarrow seeds need light to germinate and should be sown on or very near the soil surface rather than covered deeply. In Zone 7, April plantings can sometimes be affected by heavy rains, temperature fluctuations, dry conditions, or poor seed-to-soil contact, all of which can reduce germination. While yarrow is very hardy once established, the germination stage can be more sensitive than many gardeners expect. We know that timing plays a big factor and can be more of a challenge in your zone 5. Yarrow can be a bit slow to establish from seed, and cooler spring temps may delay germination.
