We are sorry that your Pastel Mix Freesias didn't establish as expected, especially after planting such a large flower bed and looking forward to their beautiful blooms. In Zone 8, freesias generally prefer to establish during the cooler part of the growing season, and bulbs planted in late March or April can sometimes have a shorter window to develop before warmer summer temperatures arrive. If temperatures rise quickly, growth and flowering can be reduced, or the plants may begin moving toward dormancy before blooming. Freesias also require very well-drained soil, as prolonged wet conditions can cause the corms to rot before emerging, while excessively dry conditions during establishment can also affect growth. We are glad we had the opportunity to provide a resolution. In Zone 8b, freesias generally perform best when planted in the fall, allowing them to grow through the cooler months and bloom in late winter to spring before naturally going dormant as temperatures rise. If you receive your corms outside the ideal planting window, they can be stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated location out of direct sunlight until fall. While freesia corms are perishable, those that remain firm and healthy often can still be planted successfully when conditions are right.
