In Zone 9, Freesia corms are generally better suited to fall planting, so they can establish and grow during the cooler months. A June planting exposes them to summer heat just when they are trying to begin growth, and that can suppress growth, flowering, or cause them to remain dormant. Freesias prefer cooler conditions and are generally better planted in fall in warmer climates. This allows the corms to establish as temperatures moderate and grow through the cooler season. If the corms are still firm and healthy underground, they may respond as temperatures cool, although we can’t guarantee they will after spending the summer in the ground. We are glad we were able to provide some guidance and a resolution and that you’re willing to try again. For your next planting, we recommend giving the Freesias their fresh start in fall, with well-draining soil and consistent moisture while actively growing. We hope the change in timing brings you a beautiful display!

Freesias can sometimes struggle in Zone 7 when planted later in the spring, as they prefer cooler growing conditions. Warm soil temperatures, excessive moisture, dry conditions, or poor drainage can all impact emergence. In some cases, bulbs may remain dormant longer than expected, but prolonged heat after planting is one of the most common challenges for late-spring plantings. In colder zones like yours, it can be helpful to start freesia in pots indoors about 10–12 weeks before your last expected frost. Then make sure they receive bright light and stay in a cool spot (around 50–60°F) until it’s safe to move them outdoors. This helps them come out of dormancy and grow in cooler areas more easily.
