We understand how disappointing that is after preparing a raised bed and taking the time to plant them. Delphiniums prefer cool conditions for germination, so in Zone 7, seeds sown around early June can sometimes struggle as soil temperatures warm. They should be covered only lightly and kept consistently moist, as dry conditions, overly wet soil, or temperature fluctuations can all reduce germination. Many gardeners have the best success sowing delphiniums in late fall or very early spring, or by starting them indoors under cooler conditions.
