The rewards of growing a pollinator garden
- Big, colorful blooms are the best attractors
- Consider planting native varieties to supply viable habitat for the pollinators that evolved with them
- Plant bright flowers on edges of garden and within vegetable plants to attract area pollinators
- Create a vibrant, living garden by attracting pollinators with intentional plantings
A sure sign of a successful garden is one that is teeming with an array of pollinators. They’re not only beautiful, giving your garden life and movement, they are also absolutely necessary in vegetable gardens. Pollinators look for two things while visiting a garden: pollen and nectar. Both of these are delicious treats only found in flowers. The most effective step to attract pollinators to your garden is to plant flowers. However, bees and butterflies are not completely impartial when it comes to flowers. They do prefer some flowers over others, like ones with bright colors or bell-shaped flowers. Flowers like sunflower, bee balm, salvia, butterfly weed, butterfly bush, lavender, snapdragon, blanket flower, and marigold are usually the most successful.
