The best organic pumpkins for fall
There are so many reasons that autumn is the best time of year. Autumn brings cool mornings and warm afternoons, and the most bountiful harvest the garden has seen as plants reach peak maturity. Of all the fun fall things though, pumpkins are certainly the most magical—-for kids of all ages. Pumpkins may seem like an intimidating project for beginning and seasoned gardeners alike because of their need for space, but pumpkins are remarkably easy to grow.
How to plant organic pumpkin seeds
Organic pumpkins prefer to be directed seeded after the last frost and the soil has warmed up to at least 65°F. Most varieties take between 80 and 120 days to mature, so in colder climates, you may want to start pumpkins indoors and transplant them outside to give the plants a jumpstart. Organic pumpkins love the sun and well-drained, rich soil. These are vining plants and take up a lot of space, so put them in an area of your garden where they can sprawl. Give each plant a wide berth of 20 feet or they may choke out some of your other garden residents.
When seeding organic pumpkins, build the soil into mounds to raise the temperature and increase drainage. Plant three to five seeds in each mound and thin to two seedlings as they mature. All gourds need water, so water the pumpkins deeply when they need it—not so much that the soil is constantly saturated, but don’t skip watering when the soil is dry to the touch.
Organic pumpkins have great health benefits
Organic pumpkins store well and double as home or porch decor before it’s time to go in the oven. The flesh of organic pumpkins is rich in Vitamins C and E, iron, and folate. Organic pumpkin seeds are a fantastic source of protein and fiber and contain antioxidants, magnesium, iron, and zinc. Organic pumpkins are a beautiful, nutritional vegetable that tastes good too!
