Grow the best organic melons from seed

If you were lucky enough to grow up eating cantaloupes and honeydew from a relative’s vegetable garden, then you know that store-bought melons are nothing compared to homegrown. Wouldn’t you like to impress your friends and family with melons from your own garden this year?

Organic melons are very easy to grow but require specific planting conditions. These heat-loving annuals do best in hot climates with full sun but can be grown in other areas too. If you have a cooler climate, grow organic melons in a hoop house or use black plastic to capture heat and warm the soil even more.

How to plant organic melons

When the soil temperature is at least 70°F, organic melons seeds are ready to go in the ground. Amend garden beds with compost and fertilizer and build several mounds. Direct sow a few seeds in each mound. Alternatively, start organic melon seeds indoors three weeks before the last frost. Transplant starts three feet apart to allow for these vining plants to sprawl. Provide plenty of water on a regular basis to produce the sweetest fruits.

When to harvest organic melons

Organic melons are ready to harvest when the rind starts to look somewhat bleached out and the fruits will easily pull off the vine. Organic melons are indeterminate—meaning the plants will produce multiple fruits from the same vine all season, so succession plantings are not necessary.

Using melons for microgreens

Obviously, we grow melons for their delectable fruit—but did you know that organic melons make a tasty microgreen too? To grow melon-flavored microgreens, fill a seed tray with soil and multi-sow a pinch of seeds in every cell. Water as needed until the seedlings are two inches tall, or have their first set of true leaves. Use a pair of scissors to cut sections of seedlings at the base. Enjoy these microgreens within the first few days of harvesting, and schedule weekly succession plantings for a continuous harvest.
