Easy-to-grow vegetables for compact gardens
Container gardening is becoming increasingly popular, with urban and rural growers alike. Raised beds and container pots are an effective and efficient way to grow many vegetables. Containers tend to drain better and have warmer soil than in-ground garden rows–and these drier conditions are actually better for tropical annuals like peppers and eggplant.
Even deep-rooted plants like tomatoes and asparagus can be grown in containers if the pot is deep enough. Transplant deep-rooted seedlings into a ten or twenty-gallon pot between 18 and 24 inches wide to allow the plants enough space to develop an ample root system.
Keep in mind that containers dry out faster than the surface, soil, so check your pots more frequently but allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Some containers also have the added benefit of being moveable, so you can shuffle the containers around to follow the sun (or shade) throughout the day.
The best seeds to grow in a small garden
Just because your garden is small doesn’t mean it has to be simple.
While you can grow nearly any vegetable in a big enough container, herbs and leafy greens are especially well-suited to window boxes and pots. Lacinato Kale and Red Russian Kale are just two of the many heirloom kale varieties that thrive in containers.
Make the most of your small space garden by intercropping vegetables together. Cherry Belle Radishes and Little Finger Carrots are a popular intercropping pair—the radishes are harvested first, leaving behind loose soil and space for carrots to mature. Companion planting is a technique that maximizes space and resources while minimizing pest pressure.
Many container-friendly vegetables are dwarf or compact varieties, so they’re easier to maintain and harvest. Tomatoes like Tiny Tim only grow about a foot tall but still mature in around two months, making them the perfect patio plants.
Don’t let anything stand in the way of your vegetable garden–least of all, space. These 300 vegetable seeds are perfectly suited to small spaces and compact gardens. See how easy and rewarding growing vegetables can be. These are our favorite tried-and-true container garden varieties, so snag your favorites today before they sell out.
