Special Qualities of the Peony Flower
There is hardly a more fragrant, gorgeous bloom than a peony. But did you know that this cut flower has medicinal properties too? Peony roots contain anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties. Peony blooms are associated with romance, love, and prosperity and are a favorite among brides and floral designers. If you happen to live in the Hoosier State, the sweet peony is Indiana's state flower!
How to Plant and Grow Peonies
Herbaceous peonies, like Shirley Temple and Coral Charm, are grown from root cuttings that are fall-planted. Be sure to plant peony roots at least six weeks before the first killing frost. Eden Brothers ships peony roots by growing zone, removing the guesswork for you. You should plant your precious peony roots around the same time you receive them in the mail!
Peonies are long-lived plants (some varieties are known to live for 100 years!), so invest in your soil before planting. Plant peony roots in a well-drained area that receives at least six hours of sun for the healthiest blooms. Peony roots will have pink buds, or eyes, from which the stems will grow. Dig a hole roughly eight inches across by a foot deep, and lay peony roots in the hole with the eyes facing up. Cover the roots with two inches of soil (plant too deep and the stems won't make buds), water the plants, and mulch the row to suppress weeds and protect the rootstock. Plant each peony root cluster about three feet apart to allow the bushes ample room to spread and to promote good ventilation.
Be patient with peonies because not all of them bloom in their first year. By the second or third year, you will be harvesting buckets of blooms! Deadhead spent flowers to keep peony plants producing.
