Why gardeners love annual flowers
- Annual flowers grow quicker and bloom longer
- An annual life-cycle ends each fall
- Gardeners choose annuals for their showy color
- Annuals allow gardeners to replant and reconfigure their beds each year
Annuals have a lot of work to do in one year! True annuals are plants that germinate, flower, set seed, and die usually all within the spring, summer and fall of one year. The ultimate goal of an annual is to reproduce itself. To accomplish this endeavor, annual flowers bloom quickly and create the showiest blooms to attract pollinators. They also drop seeds in hopes of returning during the next growing season. They work hard and fast until their mission is complete, which is good news for us! While most annuals require replanting the following spring, some, such as sweet alyssum, bachelor's button, cosmos, and forget-me-nots, self-sow and return for another season.
